This research study was undertaken by the Sir Frederick Banting Legacy Foundation as a result of several frustrating and unproductive attempts to find surveillance data for youth living with diabetes. The hope is the results might prompt those with greater resources to re-think their priorities regarding surveillance needs, especially, for Type 2 in youth. We used Australia, Canada, United Kingdom and United States as the study focus/comparators. Over 140 papers and 30 surveillance systems/processes were reviewed. In addition to summaries of key findings and conclusions, the paper includes a detailed section for each country. A section highlights 10 papers chosen as representative of the potential for improved surveillance going forward. Absent effective surveillance data, it is all too easy to just ‘ignore’ the growing risk for youth. The complete paper can be found at http://bantinglegacy.ca/count-the-children/
