The Diabetes Education Modules (2011) contain more than 800 slides and detailed speaker notes to reflect the objectives contained in the International Curriculum for Health Professionals Education.

Health professionals anywhere in the world can adopt this resource to develop diabetes education programmes for other health professionals.

Overview of Diabetes Education Modules 2011:

Section 1 – Self-Management Education consists of two modules that cover the role of the diabetes educator, principles and practical application of teaching and learning and psychosocial issues and counselling for behaviour change.

Section 2 – Diabetes and Lifestyle Intervention consists of six modules the basics of diabetes management; pathophysiology, classification and prevention, the basics of nutrition and physical activity, and an overview of clinical monitoring.

Section 3 – Pharmacotherapy consists of three modules covering blood glucose-lowering medicines, insulin therapy and an overview of complementary therapies.

Section 4 – Glycaemic Excursions consists of two modules devoted to hypoglycaemia, managing sick days, diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic state.

Section 5 – Diabetes-Related Complications consists of five modules focusing on the long-term complications of diabetes.

Section 6 – Special Situations contains one module on planning for disasters.

Each module contains slides, facilitators’ notes and activities. Activities are used to increase participation during a programme and to allow some practical application of the discussion material.It contains also a Facilitator’s Guide to assist in planning, implementing and evaluating the programme. It is strongly recommended that the Facilitator’s Guide be reviewed before any programme is undertaken.
