In this case study we focus on the topic of Diet and Mental Health. Mr. X, who is a 67 year obese man with heart failure (HF), presents sub-clinical depression and pre-diabetes. Mr. X is medication compliant and most existing symptoms and risk factors are well controlled with the exception of his weight.
Mr. X shows a lack of ownership to his dietary intake and since his HF diagnosis 5 years ago, Mr. X has trouble maintaining a diet for longer than 2-3 weeks. As his BMI remains elevated, he is now seeking professional assistance to lose weight.
What type of dietary intervention with respect to macronutrient profile would you recommend to simultaneously target Mr X’s mood, IGT and weight? ?
What considerations might need to be made when initiating any of these dietary interventions in view of his current medication regime and comorbidities?
